Family Law

Family law is the branch of the law that deals with family-related legal issues, which are often complicated and emotionally-charged.

In general, family law encompasses the following areas:
marriage law, divorce, child custody, child support, adoption, living together, domestic partnerships, reproductive rights, emancipation of minors, domestic violence, paternity, parental rights and liability, guardianship and foster care.

Each of these areas is broad in scope. For example, matrimonial law can cover areas like legal marriage basics, prenuptial agreements, domestic partnerships, marriage money and property, and same sex marriages. Divorce can cover matters like divorce forms, how to divorce, divorce laws by state and how to get help when seeking a divorce.

When confronted with a difficult family-related legal issue, a person should first decide what area of family law his problem affects. For example, if a wife has been physically abused in her home, she should consider getting a divorce from her husband. Hiring a good divorce attorney will help her get the protection she needs during the divorce. He could also help to protect her property and financial interests.

In every case involving family law, it is important to hire an attorney who specializes in these areas that a person might be having difficulty with.
